Winches

Winches for portable loggers tend to be viewed as generic devices that merely lower and raise a probe in and out of a borehole. This is only partially true, for how well they perform this seemingly simple function will, in many respects, determine how satisfactory a logger is to use. Often on the ground, exposed to the elements, and adjacent to a recently drilled borehole, winches have to function in a wet, abrasive and corrosive environment. All Delta Epsilon winches are constructed of lightweight corrosion resistant materials and all bearings are sealed and require no lubrication. The mercury wetted slip rings are sealed and require no maintainance. All winches incorporate a disk brake and an over-running clutch which ensure that probe descent is controlled. When logging uphole, if upward momentum stops for any reason, the probe cannot reverse direction or run away. It is also possible to precisely stop the probe at an exact spot in the borehole without it reversing direction or creeping backwards. All winches have an integral measuring wheel which results in a more compact design and eliminates the necessity of a connecting cable from a tripod mounted encoder. Most exposed surfaces are finished with a durable powder coat or hard anodize. All Delta Epsilon winches are characterized by fine machining, smooth and precise operation, practical rugged design and attention to detail. In addition to these shared features, each model has specific characteristics which complement its intended use and depth capacity.

Probes

Using surface mount technology and innovative packaging, all geophysical probes are capable of being used in holes as small as 50mm.( 2") in diameter. Length and weight have been reduced to manageable levels with the intent that the entire logging system will be carried in a passenger car or small truck and operated by one person. For any given combination of measurements, Delta Epsilon probes are among the shortest available and, in some instances, are less than half the length of competing products. From a design standpoint, there is no limit to the number of measurements that could be combined, but for practical reasons, we feel five related measurements is a meaningful limit. All digitization occurs within the probe and data are precisely and reliably sent by digital telemetry to the surface. Delta Epsilon has access to nearby USDOE borehole calibration models and several test boreholes including a 300M USGS drilled and cored test hole. Every system that we manufacture is field tested prior to shipment. Test data and appropriate calibration data are supplied to the end user.
